O International LGBTQIA+ Pride Day is celebrated worldwide on June 28. Even today, this community suffers from prejudice and violence in different parts of the world to a lesser or greater extent. Despite the Brazilian law that criminalizes homophobia, of 2019, there is still much to do in our country. More than 20 million Brazilians and Brazilians identify as LGBTQIA+ people. From 2018 onwards, 51% of people in the community reported having suffered some type of violence motivated by their sexual orientation or gender identity. Of these, 94% suffered verbal violence. In 13% of the cases, people also suffered physical violence.
Brazilian trans women are 12 times more likely to suffer a violent death than in other countries. Brazil is the country that kills the most trans and transvestites in the world. The LGBTQIA+ Pride Day has as its main objective the awareness of the population about the importance of combating LGBTphobia for the construction of a society free of prejudice and egalitarian.
VV joined the NGOs “Encontro das Cores” and “Casa Nem”, which work with the empowerment of LGBTQIA+ people, support at different levels and reception in cases of violence, to make a difference also in this very important issue.
